This slide shows a section  of tissue taken from the lung. Note that the bulk of this organ  is composed  of simple  squamous  epithelial cells that  facilitate  rapid gas exchange between tiny air sacs called alveoli and surrounding blood vessels (not shown).  Observe  how these  cells appear different when viewed from the surface as opposed to the side.
