This slide shows a basophil, the rarest of the leucocytes with a typical frequency of less than 1% of the total WBC count.  Note that the nucleus (usually  two-lobed) is rather indistinct being hidden by large purple or purplish-black cytoplasmic granules.  It is not unusual to fail to encounter basophils in differential white blood cell counts.
