This image is from the outermost portion of the mucosa, which contains the ducts of gastric glands.  Below the gastric glands is the muscularis mucosa, a thin but complete layer of smooth muscle containing both circular and longitudinally arranged fibers.  Below the muscularis mucosae on this image is the beginning of the submucosa, which consists dense irregular connective tissue and numerous blood and lymphatic vessels.
