This image shows the two bones of the leg, the tibia and fibula (indicated by the red arrows). The long, slender fibula is comprised of a head with a surface that articulates with the lateral tibia and a shaft that terminates distally as the lateral malleolus. The fibula does not bear any weight, but is bound to the tibia by the interosseous membrane, which extends from the interosseous crest of the fibula to that of the tibia. The fibula does not articulate with the femur at its proximal end. |
