This magnified view of the retina  (which has become detached from the under- lying fibrous and vascular tunics during the preparation of the slide) clearly shows the three layers of this sensory portion of the eye wall.   Adjacent to the vitreous chamber is the ganglion cell layer, which contains cells that generate an action potential and transmit it to the brain.  The middle layer of bipolar cells consists of cells that conduct the electrical signals generated by the rods and cones (the photosensitive cells of the eye) to the ganglion cells.
