The major pathway taken by lymph within the node is through lymph sinuses which are typically located adjacent to trabeculae (major extension of the capsule that divide the node into several compartments). The lymph sinuses are relatively open areas spanned by reticular fibers with attached macrophages that remove foreign bodies as the lymph flows by. The sinuses are continuous with afferent and efferent lymphatic vessels and are anatomically named by their location (i.e., cortical sinus and medullary sinus). |
