This image from the duodenum shows a number of Paneth cells, which are found at the bases of the intestinal glands.   In this special preparation, the granular cytoplasm of the Paneth cells has been stained a brilliant reddish-orange color. These cells help to defend the small intestine against certain bacteria by secreting lysozyme, an antibacterial enzyme.
