This image again shows some of the details of the cat digestive system. As mentioned previously, the first portion of the colon is called the ascending colon, which extends toward the liver where it bends to the left at a 90o angle and crosses the upper abdominal cavity as the transverse colon. At the left abdominal wall, the colon makes another right angle turn to form the descending colon, which leads to the rectum. Note the prominent spleen, which is not actually part of the digestive system. The spleen is considered part of the lymphatic system where it participates in producing lymphocytes, filtering blood and destroying old red blood cells. |
