The Silver Lamprey
The image above shows the mouth of a lamprey.
The
scientific name, Ichthyomyzon unicuspis, may seem
overwhelming at first, but if it is broken down into parts, it
is more straight-forward. “Ichthys” means fish in Greek and “myzo”
means to suckle (Froese & Pauly 2011). Unicuspis means
single cusps. Now, let’s put all that we know together.
Ichthyomyzon unicuspis means a sucker fish that has
single cusps of circumoral teeth (Froese & Pauly 2011).
We have focused in on some of the major areas of study
of the Silver Lamprey. Check out our website and explore the
several pages listed to the left to learn more about this interesting
parasite! The classification page would be a great place to
start to learn about all the taxonomic levels of the
Ichthyomyzon unicuspis.
