A Sight for Sore Eyes
Welcome! Brace yourselves for one of
the most cringe-worthy parasites you’ll ever lay your eyes on,
literally! Loa loa, more commonly known as the African
Eye Worm is a
graphic parasite common in many countries in
Western and Central Africa. This
parasitic worm spends its adulthood living within the
subcutaneous tissues of mammalian eyeballs. All it takes
to contract this eye-dwelling parasite is one little bite from a
deerfly contaminated with the larva of Loa loa.
