This image shows a portion of the right hand and the distal ends of the radius and ulna.  The hand is comprised of three groups of bones: the carpals (wrist bones), the metacarpals (palm bones) and the phalanges (finger bones).  There are three phalanges on each of the fingers (distal, middle and proximal) and two phalanges on the thumb, or pollex (proximal and distal).  Each of the eight carpals is  given  a unique name.
