The inner mucosa of the esophagus consists of a layer of stratified squamous epithelium lining the lumen of the organ, the lamina propria and the muscularis mucosae (not visible on this image).   Note the thickness of the epithelium (which provides protection from abrasion by swallowed food) and the change in shape of the cells as you scan from the outer to inner layers.
