The surface of the stomach consists of a layer of simple columnar epithelial cells resting on a thin but distinct basement membrane.  This epithelium extends into gastric pits that lead to gastric glands.  The spaces between these epithelial cells are filled with a fine connective tissue with diffuse lymphatic tissue that constitutes the lamina propria.
