This image shows a magnified view of two types of secretory cells found in the gastric glands of the stomach. Note that the parietal cells (which produce hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor) are large and somewhat triangular in shape with large, centrally-located, rounded nuclei and a pale orange cytoplasm. In contrast, the chief cells (which produce pepsinogen, the inactive form of pepsin) tend to be smaller, more rectangular in shape with a pale bluish-purple cytoplasm. |
