FredsLine

Note in this magnified image of the submucosa the presence of an extensive network of duodenal (Brunner's) glands.  These glands produce an alkaline (bicarbonate-rich) mucus that helps neutralize the acidic chyme entering the duodenum from the stomach.  In cross section, these tubular glands appear somewhat like miniature "wagon wheels".
