The Gentle Giant!

The lake sturgeon has been important to humans for many centuries. The Native Americans relied on them for food, oil, and leather. They developed ways of capturing this giant creature by means that are still practiced today. Spearing is one popular method and is also popular around the area I am from. I was raised to appreciate the marvel of lake sturgeon because of the fact that I grew up near a body of with one of the largest population of lake sturgeon, Lake Winnebago. The lake sturgeon had some troubles keeping the population healthy, but now is treasured as a prize fish during a regulated spearing season that is a culture in many communities back home. This is one of the many reasons I chose this species to create a website about along with the fascination of their survival through prehistoric eras.
