The Gentle Giant!
The lake sturgeon has been important to humans
for many centuries. The Native Americans relied on them for food,
oil, and leather. They developed ways of capturing this giant
creature by means that are still practiced today. Spearing is one popular method and is also popular around the area I am from. I was
raised to appreciate the marvel of lake sturgeon because of the fact
that I grew up near a body of with one of the largest population of
lake sturgeon, Lake Winnebago. The
lake sturgeon had some troubles keeping the population healthy, but
now is treasured as a prize fish during a regulated spearing season
that is a culture in many communities back home. This is one of the
many reasons I chose this species to create a website about along
with the fascination of their survival through prehistoric eras. To
