Interactions with other Species

Humans - We do not usually interact very much with wild Common Octopuses, or any other wild octopuses for that matter.  We do however deal with octopus fisheries a lot.  Octopus is a very common meal in Japan, Northwest Africa, and many Mediterranean countries.  Occasionally you may see a person with a pet octopus and it would be safe to assume it is an Octopus vulgaris.

Food Chain - Octopus vulgaris is in the middle of the food chain.  It feeds on smaller creatures such as crabs, lobsters, mussels, and other shell fish.  The octopus is a common treat for sharks, whales, and sometimes bigger fish.

Other - Octopuses are solitary creatures.  They live alone and only come in purposeful contact with one another in the spring during mating season.
