Somatochlora hineana

Hine's Emerald Dragonfly

Photographed by US fish and Wildlife - Somatochlora hineana

Welcome to my site about one of the prettiest and rarest insects in America, Somatochlora hineana, otherwise known as Hine's Emerald Dragonfly.  This site is a webpage designed for Organismal Biology at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse.  The goal is a comprehensive look at this species of dragonfly.  This emerald dragonfly is the only dragonfly on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service list of Endangered Animals (Burton).  It is also listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) red list of threatened species (<http://www.iucnredlist.org/search/details.php/20342/all>).  This dragonfly is located only at a few small sites in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and maybe Missouri with the biggest breeding grounds locating in Door County, Wisconsin (Cashatt).  For more information on this wonderful insect, please click on the links below.
