The Black Death

Yersinia pestis

The name "Black Death" was not used in the middle ages.  Rather it was created by the writers of textbooks to convey how horrible and damaging this disease proved to be.

Yersinia pestis has been isolated from all continents except for Australia and Antarctica.  It is the contributing agent to plague.  In order to spread quickly the plague must be transferred by water, which is the reason for such devastation at port cities.

Yersinia pestis is very sensitive to heat and drought.  It is said to be regarded as one of the most pathogenic bacterial species.
