At each level of classification described it is important to view an associated phylogenetic tree to understand the evolution of the american lobster.

For additional, more broad phylogenetic tree classifications on any organism please visit the Tree of Life Web Project.

This tree shows that the cray fish are close relatives to the American lobster, but the phylogeny shown of the Nephropidae family is based on morphology (courtesy of Jan Robert Factor) and the rest of the tree is based on molecular data and is based off the phylogenetic trees of Tree of Life Web Project.
