Superior to the foramen magnum is the superior nuchal line, a rough ridge forming a semicircle between the foramen magnum and the lambdoid suture.  This line is an important attachment point for a number of neck and back muscles and marks the upper boundary of the neck.  At the middle of the superior nuchal line is a bump that you can feel on the back of your own skull called the external occipital protuberance.
