Other Interesting Factsct
We chose to do research on the grizzly bear because our topic was organisms who make their habitats in caves. Grizzly bears do not necessarily live in caves, however they sometimes use caves for hibernation. Grizzly bears are extremely fascinating creatures! One of the most interesting things about them is that they can be found right here in the United States. Here are a few other interesting facts that we found about the grizzly bear:
- Grizzly bears can be up to eight feet tall and weigh up to 800 pounds (National, 2011).
- They are named because of their thick coats that tend to look frosted or "grizzly" in color, however their fur can range in color from light brown to almost black (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 2000).
- Grizzly bears can be distinguished from black bears by their curved-in faces, high-humped shoulders, and very long, curved claws which are about the size of a human finger (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 2000).
- Grizzly bears are highly intelligent and have excellent memories (Cooper, 2010).
- They have a better sense of smell than most hound dogs (Cooper, 2010).
- Contrary to popular belief, grizzlies, as well as other bears, have good vision. In fact, their eyesight is just as good as a human's eyesight (Cooper, 2010).
- During hibernation, grizzly bears' heat rate can slow to only 8
beats per minute (Cooper, 2010).
