There are 43 extant species of the
Phelsuma gecko most of which are found in Madagascar (Rocha, S.,
Vences, M., Glaw, F., Posada, D., and D.J. Harris. 2009).
- The
Phelsuma laticauda gecko has been introduced to areas
as far away as Hawaii, and due to their ability to adapt to
a variety of climates, they have successfully spread to many
of the Hawaiian Islands (Goldberg,
S.R., and F. Kraus.
2011).
- P.
laticauda has many intricate markings in a variety of
colors such as green, yellow, red, and even blue (Saenko,
S.V., Teyssier, J., Van der Marel, D., and M.C.
Milinkovitch. 2013).
- The
Phelsuma lizards are mostly awake during the day, which
is unusual and unique to their genus as most geckos are
active during the night hours (Rocha, S., Vences,
M., Glaw, F., Posada, D.,
and D.J. Harris. 2009)
- The Gold
Dust Day Gecko are not at risk of becoming extinct; in fact,
many people even keep them as house pets
