Babesiosis is not confined only to dogs. Different Babesia species parasitize different hosts, which can include dogs, cats, mice, horses, deer, and even humans. However, your dog cannot transmit this parasite to you.

Parasitic piroplasms of the Babesia genus may be classified as large (3-5 μm) or small (1.5-2.5μm). Babesia canis is recognized as large, whereas its piroplasm counterpart, Babesia gibsoni, is recognized as small.
