The most lateral and posterior  of the two processes that come off the temporal bone is the  is the mastoid process.  This process serves as an attachment site for neck muscles.  Note that the mastoid process arises just posterior to the opening of the ear  (the external auditory meatus).  The small oval mandibular fossa  is located on the inferior surface of the zygomatic process and just anterior to the external auditory meatus.
