FredsLine

The muscularis externa throughout the small intestine consists of a longitudinal layer of smooth muscle fibers surrounding a thicker layer of circular muscles.  Between these two layers is that portion of the enteric nervous system called the myenteric (Auerbach´s) nerve plexus, which provides the major nervous supply to the wall of the GI tract to control its motility and secretion.
