Calvatia gigantea - Giant puffball

Structure

The Giant puffball has a very recognizable structure that helps to distinguish it from other species of the Basidiomycota phylum. Calvatia gigantea forms to be white, creamy, globelike fruiting body that has the potential to reach up to measurements of 120cm in diameter, with the typical measurements averaging between 10cm to 80cm. These fruiting bodies have a smooth, leathery texture on the outside.

The inside of the fruiting body consists of fungal spores inside spore tissue. Giant puffballs reach the point of past maturity when the spore tissue inside the fruiting body begins to turn yellowish, brown in color.
