luna moth, Actias luna

The Luna moth, scientifically known as Actias luna, is said to be one of the most beautiful moths in existence on this planet. This wild silk moth is easily recognizable with its gorgeous pale green color, pink edges, extremely unique spiral hindwings, and four moon shaped eyespots on its wings. Unfortunately sighting this extravagant moth is highly unlikely due to its nocturnal habit of late night activity and its extreme camouflage to its green surroundings during the day. However, if your are from North America, your chances of encountering a luna moth are heightened thanks to its native regions in the deciduous forests of the northeastern United States and Canada.
