Interactions

 

The interaction of the Vampire Finch and other organisms is very unique. The Finch feeds on cloacal secretions of the Boobies.

 

 It also feeds on the eggs of inexperienced Blue-Footed Boobies, who lay their eggs outside the nesting area. To break open the eggs, they use their legs to roll them into rocks until they crack.

The drinking of the blood from the Boobies does not harm the Boobies and originated from the cleansing of the Booby parasites. This interaction started as a mutualistic relationship, where the finch received nutrition and the Booby was clean of parasites. This interaction turned into a commensalistic relationship, since the finch still receives nutrition and the Booby is not affected.
