-During the first expedition to the deep sea hydrothermal vents they did not expect to see life, so they were unprepared to take specimens back to the surface.
-Riftia pachyptila is completely void of a digestive tract.
-Riftia pachyptila's life span is unknown, it has only recordedly died when the hydrothermal vents stopped.
-Larvae can travel over 100km in a 5 week period.
-Riftia pachyptila was very recently discovered, 1977 at the Galapagos Rift.
