Binary Fission

Vincent A. Fischetti Ph.D, The Laboratory of Bacterial Pathogenesis and Immunology

"The chromosome inside of the cell attaches to the plasma membrane, when attached the chromosome replicates.  After the chromosome replicates the two daughter chromosomes become attached to different sites on the plasma membrane.  A contractile ring compose of FtsZ fibers forms between the two chromosomes.  FtsZ fibers are the major component of the bacteria cytoskeleton.  As the FtsZ ring closes the cytoplasm is divided into two resulting in completion of the division" (Freeman).
