 Hippopotamus amphibious is the third largest land living animal in the world. The name comes from the Greek word for river horse, which is misleading because Hippos are more closely related to the whale than any horse. (See their phylogenetic tree.) They have an extensive group of adaptive features to help them survive in their habitat of the harsh African heat.
