In a group of Tamarins there is one dominant female, the oldest, that is allowed to mate with the males. She can either mate with one (monogamy) or multiple (polyandry), however it is more likely that she mates with all of the males. Even if she does mate with more than one male she is only able to give birth up to twice in a year; most only give birth once. It's most common for a female to have twins, there's even a chance to have triplets as well. The males aid in the birth. Once the baby is born it is carried on the parent's back for 6 to 7 weeks while they are completely helpless (McDade).
