The Atlantic cod is one of the most highly distributed and popular food fishes in the world.  However, over fishing has drastically depleted the once abundant cod stocks of the North Atlantic.  Some stocks have been estimated at less than 15% of what is considered a healthy population.  Nonetheless, cod was and still is an immensely important food source throughout the world.  It is also an important export for the United States, shipping it overseas to eager buyers.  Cod is also very common on American soils, being one of the most common fish sold in restaurants.  It is quite the tasty treat!
