Sarracenia alata

The Pale Pitcher Plant

 

The Sarracenia alata is a carnivorous plant that is more commonly known as the pale pitcher plant.  It is a herbaceous perennial and blooms between the months of March and April.

It is a tall, erect tubular plant with a thin flat lid and a rounded lip.  Its stalk is usually a pale green color when it is young, hence the name, but can also develop into a deeper green and can even produce red veins.  The average height of the Sarracenia alata is anywhere between 50cm to 60cm.  The flowers that are produced from this plant are usually a white, cream, or yellow.
