Largemouth Bass

Classification- the translation of the name Micropterus-small fin; salmonides- troutlike.  Other common names consist of big sunfish, green bass, line side, green trout, lake bass, bucketmouth and many more.

 

Physical description - The largemouth bass is olive/dark green on top and is split in half by a lateral line and fades to white on the bottom. 

Geographical Range - the largemouth bass is native to North America, Canada, and northern Mexico.  Since the beginning of the Twentieth Century largemouth bass have been successfully introduced all over the world.

The largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmonides) is in the:

·         Domain Eukarya because of the fact that the cells of this organism have membrane bound organelles, multi-cellular, presence of a nucleus, and linear DNA.

·        Kingdom Animalia because it is a heterotrophic organism that is multicellular, motile, and they lack cell walls.

·        Phylum Chordata because it has a backbone, bilateral symmetry, triploblastic, tubular nerve chord, and a postanal tail.

·        Class Actinopterygii because it is a spiny rayed fish with ray shaped fins on all sides.

·        Order Perciformes which means perch like fish.  They typically have two dorsal fins that can be connected or separated, pectoral fins, and post anal tails.  The tails consist of two parts, a soft membrane like substance along with spiny hard rays. 

·        Family Centrarchidae which is the sunfish family.  Members of this family have compressed bodies.  Members of this family all are nest builders.

·        Genus Micropterus which means small fins.

.        Species salmoides because it resembles a trout.
