Facts
- A group of penguins is called a colony (National Geographic 2014).
- The protection status of Southern Rockhopper penguins is
“vulnerable”. If the population of these penguins continues to decrease
at the current rate, Southern Rockhopper penguins will soon move to an
“endangered” status (BirdLife International 2014).
- Rockhopper penguins often burst from the water near shore and land on rocks with a belly flop (National Geographic 2014). And we think belly flopping on water hurts!
- Of the crested penguins, Southern Rockhopper penguins are the
smallest, weighing up to five pounds as adults (Penguins-World
2014).
