The Domain of Eukaryota contains all animal life, including the Hypentellium nigricans. The main requirement to be in this group must have membrane bound cells with a nucleus.

Phylum Cordata contains all animals that at some point in their life possess a notochord.

Class Actinoptergii are the "ray finned fishes" and appear to be the largest and most successful group of fishes.

Order Cypriniformes is where the minnows and suckers reside.

Family Catostomidae are the suckers.

Hepentellium nigricans are the Northern Hog suckers. They inhabit large streams, and sometimes rivers, and use their nose to pick through the rocky bottoms in order to find sustenance.
