Spirogyra is the most diverse of all the conjugating green algae. You can find this tangled organism is freshwater neutral or slightly acidic pH ponds, lakes, and slow moving streams and rivers. It often grows in short-lived ephemeral ponds that build up during wet weather and dry up shortly thereafter. There are over 400 species known, and nearly half of them are in North America. Spirogyra Longata can be found anywhere in the world where there is freshwater and adequate sunlight.
