  Potamogeton crispus, or curly leaf pondweed, is an incredible invasive species that has traveled through many lakes, estuaries, and aquariums throughout the world. Although it has been known to ravish its habitats and force out natural plants that grew there, curly leaf pondweed also benefits many of the aquatic communities it lives in. Its adaptations to living in an underwater environment allow it to compete against other submerged plant species and its efficient over-wintering lifestyle and reproduction habits allow it to continue to spread throughout the world.

Curly leaf pondweed is an important component of aquatic communities across the United States. Although it is often treated as a harbinger of death to these areas, curly leaf pondweed-- in controlled amounts-- allows for increased species diversity and healthier lake ecosystems!
