Habitat
Culaea Inconstans are a rare species that can be found locally in the La Crosse, WI area. They live in cool, clear, slow flowing streams, creeks, rivers, lakes, or ponds. Brook sticklebacks populate areas with ample amounts of algae and aquatic plants. They are also able to tolerate environments with low oxygen such as bogs and marshes. These fish primarily live in the southern half of Canada and northern part of eastern United States. Occasionally in the spring, they will migrate to ephemeral (short-lived) habitats until they move into a more permanent home. This migration could be because they are trying to get away from competition. Some organisms that live in the same habitat as brook sticklebacks are fathead minnows, brook trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and walleyes.
