Interesting Facts

Sepia apama are colorblind, but are one of the only organisms that can see the linear polarization of light.

They are the largest of all the species of cuttlefish at a mantle length of 50 cm and a weight of up to 10 kg.

They have the only known mass reproduction aggregate of all cuttlefish species.

They have the highest sex ratio of all cephalopods at 11 males for every one female.

Males will sometimes camoflage themselves to look like females in order to get closer to them during mating.

Their camoflage is one of the most elaborate in the entire ocean since they are able to change their texture as well as their color.
