Why Alfalfa?

Picture of Brooks Family

Of all the organisms out there why did I decide on alfalfa? Beside the fact that it is a fascinating organism, I live on a dairy farm that grows alfalfa yearly. This year alone we will have 350 acres dedicated to alfalfa. I have many fond memories of baling hay in the summer heat and feeding it to calves. Alfalfa is a hard perennial to reseed over itself, so crop rotation is key to healthy alfalfa. Alfalfa flowers are very beautiful, however I have yet to see them in our fields! The reason is once alfalfa reaches its flowering state, it is of poorer quality. Brooks Dairy Farms is over 150 years old, and alfalfa has been a part of it since day one.
