Puffer fish that is adgitated

Mighty Fugu

Puffs like a ball

Eat with caution

That was a haiku about Takifugu rubripes, the Japanese puffer fish. Although if prepared improperly, the consumer can die, the Japanese puffer fish, or fugu,  is know for being a delicacy in Japan. With being a delicacy comes a high price tag, and fugu is no different. A well prepared meal at a famous restaurant could cost between 10,000 - 20,000 ($100 - $200) per person. But with its increase in popularity, fugu is often found in common restaurants for between 1,500 - 2,000 ($15- $20) and can also be found in some grocery stores.

There are approximately 40 - 70 deaths in Japan due to puffer fish poisoning every year. The last documented puffer fish poisoning  in the USA was in 1996 when three men were taken to the hospital after eating mislabeled puffer fish. Follow me to learn more about how the puffer fish is poisonous.
