Sarracenia rubra, as well as most carnivorous plants, can reproduce through sexual and asexual reproduction. Sarracenia rubra has flowers that can grow to be approximately 30 inches above the ground. The flowers are monecious, meaning that they have both female and male components. Sarracenia rubra can sexually reproduce by self-pollination or cross-fertilization.

Sexual reproduction occurs through fertilization of the pollen from the pitcher plant’s anther, which is transferred to a prepared pistil for fertilization. Fertilization occurs and the seed forms in the ovary.

Asexual reproduction gives rise to an exact copy of the parent plant. Sarracenia rubra can asexually reproduce through the rhizome, or leaves that are removed from the plant.

The rhizome is located underground in the roots. The rhizome has multiple growth points which branch out underground.
