Where does the "drummer" live?
The ruffed grouse can be found across Northern America, through Canada and up into Alaska, and as far south as northern Georgia. They share their habitat with other interesting organisms like the white-tailed deer, bald eagle, pigeons, and the gray wolf.
As can be seen in the map (left), ruffed grouse are permanent residents of their environment. They do not migrate in the winter like most birds, and have adapted accordingly (see adaptations).
The preferred habitat of ruffed grouse is in deciduous forests, usually with aspen, birch, and willow trees.
