  • The oldest living mango tree is 300 years old and is found in East Khandesh.  Surprisingly, this tree still produces viable fruit!

 

  • Mangos are the most eaten fruit worldwide, largely in part due to the people of India who consume 11 kilos of mangos!

 

  •  The largest mango tree, grown in the village of Burail, covered an area of 2260 square meters.  The trunk had a girth measuring 10 meters and the branches grew to nearly 25 meters.  Yearly, the tree produced nearly 16,780 kilos!  Unfortunately, the tree was struck by lightning in 1955.

 

  • India produces over 50% of the worlds mango crop!

 

  • Over 500 named varieties, or cultivars, of mangos exist!

 

  • Most pollination of mango flowers is not done by bees, but by flies and fruit bats.                

             

  • The sap that comes from mangos after being harvested is toxic and can cause rashes and swollen extremities.

 

  • The seed fat from the mango seed is used to make soap due to its high stearic acid content.

 

  • Mangos are intertwined with the history and culture of the Indian people.  In fact, mangos are present throughout Hindu folklore and mythology.
