About Me

My name is Ivy Miemietz and I am currently a  sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and I am pursuing a career in Biomedical Science/Pre-Medicine. I grew up in the small town of Independence, WI and graduated from Elk Mound High School in Elk Mound, WI. Anatomy and physiology was my favorite class in high school because the human body is so complex and is capable of so many great things. I loved learning about how every part of our bodies worked and what we need them for. My interest in this class has lead me to choosing a career in the medical field.

Every year since my sophomore year of high school, I have volunteered at The Special Olympics in Eau Claire, WI. I worked with the Healthy Athletes Health Promotion program, where we would perform free health screening on each athlete. This screening includes measuring BMI, bone density, and blood pressure of each individual. An interview is also done to see what kind of foods they were eating and if they were obtaining proper nutrition and hydration. Other stations were set up to inform these athletes how to eat right, exercise regularly and protect themselves from the sun.

This has been an amazing opportunity for me. It has opened my eyes to how many people are in need of love, support, and encouragement in order to tackle the diseases that they face every day. From this experience, I decided that I want nothing more than to help people to the best of my ability, which is why I have chosen a career in the medical field. Though it will require a lot of time, school, and strength to get where I want to be, I am determined to do all that I can to reach my goal.  The Special Olympics is always looking for volunteers so if you are interested in doing so, please visit http://www.specialolympics.org/ and click on the "Get Involved" tab at the top of the page.

I have many hobbies that include hunting, four wheeling, dirt biking, rollerblading, boating and spending time with my three dogs. Needless to say I love the outdoors!  When I decide to stay in, I like to read, make jewelry, listen to music (mostly country), and occasionally watch movies. Some of my favorite movies include The Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, James Bond, Iron Man and The Avengers.

I built this website for Organismal Biology, which is a class I am currently enrolled in. The reason I chose to do bloodroot is because it is such a beautiful flower with such a dangerous aspect to it. Yet, it also has  healing characteristics. The potential that this plant has amazes me, and I truly believe someday it could be the reason that cancer and other devastating diseases will be cured.

I hope you have found my website useful and that you have learned something from it. This has been a very interesting project for me and I am so glad to be able to share what I have learned with the rest of the world. Thanks for visiting!
