Bromus hordeaceus is a photoautotrophic organism meaning that it makes its food and energy through photosynthesis. Photosynthesis occurs in the plants leaves, specifically in the chloroplasts, and is the process plants use to convert sunlight into chemical energy (ATP) to produce complex organic molecules, like glucose and starch from simple inorganic molecules, like carbon dioxide and water.

Soft chess has fibrous roots (DiTomaso et al. 2013). Its fibrous roots will take in water from the soil and bring that water up through the stem's xylem and into the leaves where the stromata take in carbon dioxide and absorb sunlight into the thylakoid membranes where the light excites electrons.  The excited electrons create NADPH and ATP through Photosystems I and II. This is the light-dependent reaction.
