Bubo virginianus

Facts

Great horned owls benefit people by controlling the populations of rodents throughout their habitats (National Wildlife Federation 2014). This could include rodents such as the house mouse.

The great horned owl is sometimes referred to as the "Tiger of the Sky" or the "Flying Tiger" because they are such excellent hunters (Birding/Wild Birds 2014).

The oldest great horned owl found was 27 years and 7 months (Elphick et al. 2001).
